Playing with sand has always been relaxing for me. On the other side I’ve always been good at killing plants. Oddly enough terrariums are something my kids and I have gotten good at. My four year old completely relaxes and by the end is full of smiles even on the hardest days. I love finding things that are easy to do and brighten our days!

Terrariums are such a fun, easy craft and so simple for my kids to maintain! We have gotten plants from our local florist (we always get our air plants here) and from Walmart. The ones from the florist are holding up a bit better but so far we have not killed any. There are many ways to make a terrarium but here’s how we do it!
SUCCULENTS
Supplies:
-Jar, vase, cup, bowl, pot, terrarium (big enough for multiple layers of sediment and to plant your succulent)
– small succulent (or large depending on the size of your holder)
-sand
-potting soil
-rocks
-decorations(plastic animals, seashells, Moss, decorative rocks, bugs, decorative sand, glow in the dark rocks)
1. Layer the bottom with sand.

2. Add a layer of big rocks.

3. Add a layer of small stones (not necessary I just like the way it filters and adds to the look, I just use the decorative rocks).

4. Add a layer of dirt and plant your succulent.

5. Decorate your pot as you like (my kids love adding animals to theirs, I prefer shells and colourful rocks).

Our succulents only need water approximately once every 3 weeks in winter and in summer it’s closer to 8-10 days. I check them every few days to make sure they are not bone dry by checking the dirt. Most of mine only need about half a cup and are good to go. If you get your plants from a florist make sure you ask about their tips for care!
AIR PLANTS

We get our air plants from a local florist and they come in so many cool shapes and sizes! Ours are little ones because that’s what fits in the terrariums my kids picked.
Supplies:
-Jar, vase, cup, bowl, pot, terrarium (big enough for multiple layers of sediment)
-air plant
-sand
-rocks
-decorations(plastic animals, seashells, Moss, decorative rocks, bugs, decorative sand, glow in the dark rocks)
The nice thing about air plants is they can be built any way you like! We like a lot of fun sand and the coloured rocks. You can fill them up as much or as little as you like. Layer your decorations until you are happy with the look then plop on your air plant.
The nice thing about air plants is they only need water every 7-10 days and moderate sun. The ones I have sit in a cup for 10 or so minutes then it goes back into the container.
Nice, easy way to add some fun colour and a cute, simple to care for plant!
